Explaining the Fruitarian Diet

People who adhere strictly to the fruitarian diet eat nothing other than fruits, nuts and seeds. Some fruitarians deviate somewhat from this strict plan. Up to twenty-five percent of their diet could be drawn from other food groups.

The Fruitarian Philosophy

Fruitarians believe that fruits, nuts and seeds are the foods that nature intends for us to eat.

To the fruitarian, this diet is a way of life. Its scope reaches far beyond that of a weight loss diet or a detox diet.

The philosophy holds that fruit encompass almost all - more than ninety-nine percent - of abundant foods. Some maintain that fruits are the perfect food for us from an evolutionary standpoint. They point out that fruits mature to be the perfect portion size. Undoubtedly, they are not thinking about watermelons when they say this.

However, back on topic, fruitarians point out that fruits contain all the water and nutrients that our bodies require. Not only that, the human digestive system seems to be quite okay with fruits and seeds, although it has been known to get ornery when asked to handle meat and animal products.

And, like advocates of the raw food diet, fruitarians believe that warming a food destroys the nutrients.

In Praise of our Versatile Digestive Systems

The human digestive system is truly a work horse. Think of it. Our bodies have developed the ability to extract the nutrients from a huge range of foods. We can eat fish, meat, seafood, vegetables, dairy products - even glues and pastes - as any first grade teacher can tell you. (Not that eating glues and pastes is recommended. It should probably be avoided.)

It is also true that we can digest fruits quite nicely. Fruitarians and others believe that certain fruits provide the most benefits when eaten at a certain time of day. Despite this, they are not rigid about which fruits you eat for breakfast and which ones for dinner - they just claim some are better suited for mornings and some for late afternoon or evening.

Fruitarians further maintain that a diet of only nuts, fruits and seeds has a huge advantage over all other diets. Unlike the others, this eating plan has a build in "hunger switch."

To explain further:

The Mono-Diet

In a perfect world, we should automatically feel full and satisfied when our body has taken in enough nutrition. As any failed dieter knows, this is not how it usually works in real life. Typically, we eat - or at least we desire to eat - much more food than our body needs. The result is unwanted fat stored on our body.

Fruitarians have an explanation for this unfortunate situation. They claim that the foods we eat, even so-called healthy foods, fool our body into producing a false sensation of hunger. With some people, this false feeling of hunger is present continuously. Thus we have many overweight and obese individuals.

Fruitarians say that this situation does not occur on their eating plan - provided you avoid mixing fruits. Mix your fruits, and you will create the same hunger pangs as occur with other diets, including so-called "normal eating."

The solution, they say, is to eat one fruit and one fruit only at a meal or at a sitting. Eat until you feel satisfied and full. Alternatively, at some point, the fruit will no longer taste good. Stop eating when that happens.

You should space your fruitarian meals by at least two hours. After this period of time, you may begin to feel hunger once more. At this point eat again, but eat a different fruit. Continue as before.

What are the Rules?

There is one thing for sure about the fruitarian diet. It's a simple thing to do. There is no cooking. No worrying about calories. No wondering if you have eaten enough fish this week. No fussing about whether your mix of foods has eye appeal and looks good on the plate. No wondering if you have eaten too many carbs or the right kind of fats or if oat bran is better then wheat bran.

It's simple. You have only one rule to follow. Your only concern is to consume a wide variety of fruits.

Buy Local

One more consideration is the quality of the fruits that you buy. Fruits come to our supermarkets from all over the world. Think of apples from Canada, oranges from Florida, kiwis from New Zealand and bananas from various tropical locales.

Some fruitarians worry that although the fruit in the produce department may look wonderful, it could be severely cross bred and possibly grown in poor soil conditions. The solution, they say, is to buy locally from organic fruit growers and farmers.

This could conflict with the advice to eat a wide variety of fruits to ensure nutrition.
